If you have high horse power car, it is more stable to have sticky race tires than tractionless street tires when shifting. No car runs down the quarter in one gear, without shifting. Not shifting is mute point. Going WOT on street tires in an automatic is recipe for unstableness in high horsepower car when the shift happens. On a manual, you can modulate the clutch and the throttle. On an auto you can't modulate the clutch packs when they shift.
